How things started?

Alan “Woody” Reeves, founder of multiple IT companies over two decades, launched CyberWatch in 2020 to address a massive gap in the technology and security offerings he was providing his clients.

Reeves’ companies provided IT services for financial services, minor league baseball teams, medical practices, non-profits, etc. and were used to secure computer networks. However, starting around 2013, he noticed an alarming trend — his clients began getting hacked from the outside.

For example, a large chiropractic firm client suffered a security breach when the head chiropractor’s personal Hotmail account was hacked. The perpetrator spent weeks in the Hotmail account, eventually taking thousands of dollars from the doctor’s bank accounts. While he had an IT management solution in place managing the network and computers, nothing was watching the doctor’s personal information.

Turning Point

In 2015, Reeves was honored to be selected as one of ten IT business owners from around the country to participate in a cybersecurity “boot camp” prototype in Baltimore, MD. During this trip, Reeves was astonished to discover the emerging scope of cybersecurity threats facing his clients, and frankly, anyone. He was an early adopter in a security-first approach.

In 2016, one of his consumer-client focused companies saw an uptick in referrals from local banks. Some of these customers had been tricked into losing tens of thousands of dollars, and since the hack was technology-related, the banks didn’t know where else to send their customers to get help. Reeves knew he needed to develop a solution that focused on cyberthreats targeting individuals rather than solely protecting machines.

Reeves considered simply reselling an Identity Theft service offered by a few national big-name brands. To his amazement, he discovered that these companies were offshoring some of their support, data, and infrastructure. That was a non-starter. To meet high standards and certain compliance requirements for his clients, he knew the solution had to be completely based in the United States. So…with the help of some brilliant people in the Infosec space, including former DOD employees, the team built a solution with proprietary encryption.
